Enjoy My Song
ORIGIN STORY
I had just moved into my first dorm room while a junior at Duke. I was 19 and I spent a lot of time alone.
I don’t remember the context exactly, but I had been spending a lot of time playing piano and writing songs and I remember that this was the first song that really felt like it was mine. It flowed so naturally. The chord progression felt interesting and more complex than usual. I liked it. The lyrics came honestly and simply — I didn’t know what it meant, but I knew it was true for me and I’ve since found their meaning.
I filmed a video of me performing it the day I wrote it, which you can watch below. In musicals there is something called an “I Want Song” where you hear what the main character wants declared clearly and early in the story.
I believe this is my “I Want Song” for this album and, quite possibly, for my life. I won’t be here forever. I want to give the world as much music as I can before I go.
For the album released to the public, I decided to not include this song or Introducing. I just wanted to drop people into the story and let them enjoy the music. These songs felt too vulnerable to release to everyone. But I’m very happy to share them with you on The Complete Collection!
Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy them.
